Experimenting with pastels to make iris sketch by me Gloria Poole Registered Nurse artist of Missouri

This is my second sketch I made in my lifetime with the medium of "soft pastels". I have made sketches for my ethnic series #ethnicseries using what I call powdered pastels which are different and have much more binder in them. I think this is the third sketch I made of the flower purple iris which is one of my favorite flowers. I photograph it every time I get the opportunity and I have used an iris photo that I photographed as an icon of mine on a website for years. I drew this with soft pastels and then re-drew it about 7 times! I tried smoothing it with my fingers, with a sponge, with a tissue and then with a tool for pastels that looks sort of like a brush but has a rubber inset instead of bristles. It looks better today after trying one more time this morning about 6am to get it right. Or 'right" as it looks to me. What constitutes "Art" is in the eye of the beholder pretty much and for contemporary artists, they define what their at is. A teacher who taught me during a class when I was learning to be a docent at the High Museum of Art when I lived in metro Atlanta,Ga defined art as "once you have seen it, you never forget it". I am not sure sketches are in that category but they could be. Nevertheless, drawing and painting sketches gives me a sense of productivity and I like having something to share with the world. After I made this one, i drew another 2 irises in pencil, then painted one with watercolor and one with inktense and those are below.I drew this, painted it, signed it , photographed it, uploaded it and posted it to my blog today as is true of the following 2 sketches of irises in different mediums and of all art on this blog. All 3 of these are 9 x 12 inches in size.

This is my sketch number four of an iris and I drew it with pencil, painted it watercolor, signed it photographed it, uploaded it and posted it. This is on watercolor paper.

This is sketch number 5 of an iris that I created, and it is also 9 x 12 on watercolor paper, and I drew it with pencil then painted it with inktense, and washed over it with wet brush to make the ink permanent.Then I drew in the background [green] with chalk then washed over the chalk with alum water, which is a technique I learned from a book on creating Chinese art. I signed it, photographed it, uploaded it, posted it to this blog of mine which is true of all art on this blog.

Flanders field of flowers sketch made by me Gloria Poole,Registered Nurse and artist, blogger, writer

This is my sketch I made today of a field of flowers in Flanders. One thing I loved about Belgium and parts of France were the windmills! I drew it in graphite then painted it with watercolors. I still think windmills are one of the smartest inventions ever as they use a resource provided freely by GOD HIMSELF to create electricity by turning a turbine.I like the centuries old windmills better than the new sleek ones. I made this, signed it, photographed it, uploaded it and posted it to this blog of mine today 15th Sept 2015.

This is a sketch in which I was experimenting with thick acrylic paint to see if it would hold the brush strokes and it did. I put it on a royal blue background because it has no stems--I wanted it to look like an abstract more than a patch of flowers. I made this, signed it, photographed it more than once, uploaded it and posted it to this blog of mine today 15th Sept 2015. Red fish sketch made today by Gloria Poole,RN,artist of/in Missouri

This is a sketch I made today of a pretend fish. As far as I know there are no all red fishes anywhere! I just like the color red. I have made sketches several times of real fish and I have posted those to my blogs intermittently. I put glitter on the tail fins too-just to make it different from any other. I signed it with "digital ink" using a computer mouse, not an ink pen or paintbrush, fyi. I also added my most recent selfie to it and updated that site some. I deleted the previous cartoon because it was corrupted by cyber-criminals who broke into my blog before. And who broke into one of my cell phones trying to hijack my blogs.

Peaches in oil pastels sketch made today by Gloria Poole,RN,artist of /in Missouri

This is the sketch I made of peaches this year, and the sketch I made of peaches last year about this same time is included below this one. This 2015 sketch is oil pastels on 11 x14 bristol board. I put a wash of turpentine over them to begin with but it made them look ghastly because it blended the orange yellow and peach colors into a brownish mottley look, that I did not like. So, I "painted" it again with oil pastels without putting turpentine over it a second time. I made this, signed it, photographed it more than once, uploaded it and posted it to this blog of mine and that is true of ALL art on this blog. See the sketch I made last year 2014 of peaches but I was using watercolors for that sketch, by scrolling.

This is the sketch I made of peaches in 2014 using watercolors and it is 8 x11 paper. I am adding them both for comparison . I do not often use oil pastels because I don't seem to be very good with them. I suppose I would get better if I used that medium often. For now, it's something I use to create with on occasion. I also singed it and photographed it and uploaded it to this blog and to other blogs last year.

Sketch 3 and 4 of copper made today by Gloria Poole,RN, artist of /in Missouri

This is sketch number 3 in a series of four so far as I try to learn the technique for painting objects that look like copper. I posted sketch 1 and 2 to my https://gloriapoole.blogspot.com and also my https://gloriapoole.wordpress.com so you can compare to see if you think I am making progress on this self-appointed art project. Sketch 4 is below. I re-drew each sketch testing different shapes and compositions. I want to paint a set of copper objects in oils on canvas if I perfect the technique. This sketch is 11 x 14 on paper.I made this, signed it, photographed it, uploaded it and posted it to this blog of mine as is true of ALL art on this blog. As you can see, I made each object with a different technique and with different mediums. I do not link my wordpress blog for several reasons but type it into your web-browser.
