Sketches orange and African terrain painted today by me Gloria Poole, RN,artist of/in Missouri

I painted this sketch after seeing a similar oil painting that had more objects in it. I liked the way the orange was huge and off center in that painting so I made a sketch with only the orange to see if I could paint something that looked like an orange, and to see how something so different for me looked on computer. I usually put my central figures in the center of the page or in that triangle of attention that artists use. So putting it off-center does sort of unsettle the viewers' eyes a wee bit. This is on 8 x 11 paper that I sized with wheat paste using a recipe for that in one of my art technique sort of books. I use sketch books often and have probably filled 30 or more of them over time. My object in making my own paper is to learn how "master artists" did that because I read one of the Museums' curator's write-up of an "old Masters" painting that the "old Master [artists] " often painted on paper which was later affixed to canvas or linen. So making paper that is more archival and using techniques of 'old Masters" helps me learn as an artist. I painted this with soft pastels and signed it with the same, and photographed it, uploaded it and posted it to my blog this morning 29 Dec 2015 at 6:57am. Copyrighted. This is the 2nd sketch I made and I started it on one day and completed it the next. That was because I started the drawing with oil pastels. Then decided to wash over the "sky" with turpentine but I was out of turpentine except in the art medium I use for painting with oils. So I brushed over it with the linseed oil:turpentine medium. That was huge mistake! It made the "sky" glossy! Totally! And it made it sticky. So I waited 24 hours to complete and then blotted off some of the oil medium to help remove the glossy shine. Then decided to paint the rest of it with oil pastels not washed over with anything. Probably everyone has seen at one time or another a similar painting to this because this terrain of continent of Africa has been photographed many times, and in the news intermittently. Whether that native actually exists like that, I do not know. It is a made-up figure. This is also on 8 x 11 paper I sized with wheat paste. Of course, anyone who has done that wheat paste sizing with modern paper also knows you have to iron it with hot iron on back to smooth and then weights on top of it to flatten the paper after it is sized since it has a tendency to curl up. I also singed this photographed it uploaded it and posted and I follow the same process of making the art, signing it, photographing it, uploading it and posting it for all art on this blog and indeed on any blog of mine I post art I make too.
